What was it like joining the True Blood cast for their last season?

A really exciting opportunity.

Were you familiar with True Blood before you got the role of Keith on the show?

I was a fan of the show since the beginning. I’ve had a lot of friends on it over the years, so there has always been great reasons to support it.

Was the cast welcoming when you came onboard? Who were you close with?

They were all so welcoming from day one. My first scene was in Bill’s house with all the main vamps when we are deciding to storm the H Vamps. That was a very surreal moment for me. But everyone just made me feel at home. Starting from the top with Stephen and Anna. We have all become close. Nathan Parsons and I clicked right away like brothers. Carrie was a huge supporter from the top. She’s amazing. They all are.

DA MAN: Riley, how are you doing? Congrats on joining the cast of “True Blood.” How did the role come about?

Riley Smith: Hey, thanks very much! Well the role came about extremely quickly. I was actually shooting the pilot for “Deliverance Creek” in Austin, and the show shares the same casting team as “True Blood.” So they called me in for this new vampire role of Keith and helped make it all possible. I met with the “True Blood” producers on a Thursday morning and received a call saying that the role was mine before I’d even got back to my house after the meeting. Twelve hours later, I was in a wardrobe fitting!

DA: Did the fact that you’re a musician help you adapt to the character of “Keith,” who is a rock drummer in the show?

RS: I love playing musicians, simply because music is a great hobby of mine. However, though Keith is a drummer in the show, there are very few scenes with him actually playing drums. As such, I didn’t really have to do much to prepare in that respect!

DA: So what’s challenging about playing Keith?

RS: Well, “fanging out” took some time to get used to. You have to get comfortable speaking with them in and basically learn how to not speak with a lisp. Otherwise, I really enjoyed playing him.

DA: How do you think the viewers can relate to Keith?

RS: He’s a hopeless romantic. I think everyone has that in them somewhere and can relate to him in that way, maybe also because he seems more human than some of the other vamps.

Celebuzz: What can you tell us about your character on True Blood?

Riley Smith: His name is Keith, he’s the new vampire that they’ve enlisted to help fight the H-vamps. Then he creates this chemistry with Arlene and as you’ll see in the future, there’s going to be maybe a little bit of an attraction with those two.

CB: You came in and saved the day, so she has you to thank.

RS: She has my blood now so she’s going to be dreaming about me.

CB: Yeah! So, is it intimidating coming on a show that’s already so successful and already has a well-known cast?

RS: You know, I like that situation always because number one you’re always going to be working with great actors. I mean they wouldn’t be on a show for seven years if they weren’t great and the show wasn’t good. So that’s a plus, and number two, usually at that point you’ve got a really great core audience for the show. So as long as the character’s written well and you go in and do a good job, usually the fans are very supportive, so it’s a win-win for the most part. The only thing you have to do is not get overwhelmed or be intimidated. As long as you can do those things, everything else is already laid out for you. I was excited to start the show I wouldn’t say I was nervous but definitely it’s one of those iconic shows where you know these people so well, but yet you don’t know them. So when I first got on set with them it was kind of that feeling for awhile. Now I actually know them well so it’s great.

You know him from Hollywood hits such as: Radio, Eight Legged Freaks and Not Another Teen Movie….You know him from tv shows like 90210 and Freaks and Geeks…. And of course, no one can forget the dirt biking Disney movie, Motocrossed, which really first introduced him to audiences. Recently, Film and TV staff at 303 Magazine got up close and personal (over the phone, mind you) to talk to this A-list actor about his life and hobbies, along with his up and coming projects. It’s Riley Smith, everybody! *cue round of applause*
